Opera North: Winterreise

“As part of its 'quests' season Opera North and the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme have commissioned a filmic response to Schubert’s song cycle, Winterreise (A Winter’s Journey). The film, by the internationally acclaimed visual artist Mariele Neudecker, will be a reflection of Wilhelm Müller’s text. Mariele has made a film for each of the twenty-four movements using locations based on the sixtieth degree of latitude that experience snow-scaped winters; the Shetland Island’s, Helsinki, Oslo, St. Petersburg. The bass-baritone Andrew Foster-Williams and the pianist Christopher Gould will perform the cycle. They are an established duet, having recently performed together at the Purcell Room, and this, their first Winterreise together, is guaranteed to be a strong interpretation.”
