at 'Experimental Film Today', the University of Central Lancashire “…Only in the inspiring paper given by Dennis Hopkins & Will Rose of Leeds-based Lumen and Evolution festival, was there a genuine cause for optimism. Hopkins and Rose detailed their recent curatorial work with mainly American artists engaged with video-gaming experiments and computer modifications - Cory Arcangel, Tom Betts, Jodi, Joseph Delappe and more - whose work not only transcends the staid parameters of experimental film while correlating its genesis in structural cinema, crossing auditoria and gallery space, but is also a testament that work made means nothing without being alive, now…” — Art Monthly, September 2003 Howl: Elite Force Voyager Online, Joe Delappe, 2001 “ I connected to Elite Force Voyager Online, choosing as my character, Allen Ginsberg - I then proceeded to recite/type, in it's entirety, Howl.” Lumen's presentation was entitled: Computer Games as Synthetic Experimental Cinema and introduced a range of works which are exemplary of the emerging and prominent art practice of video games modifications or mods, and the use of the video game enviroment as a space for artistic expression.
