Lillian
Schwartz: A Beautiful Virus Inside the Machine
Curated by Gregory Kurcewicz and Lumen.
Funded by Arts Council England, Yorkshire
21 January 2005 | PureScreen, Kings
Arms, 11 Bloom Street, Salford, M3 6AN | 7-8.30pm | Free
The final screening of Lumen's touring programme highlighting the
pioneering work of Lillian Schwartz, resident artist and consultant
at Bell Laboratories (New Jersey, US), 1969-2002. The 55 minute
screening will be introduced by co-curator Gregory Kurcewicz.
During the 70s and 80s Schwartz developed
a catalogue of visionary techniques for the use of the computer
system by artists. Her formal explorations in abstract animation
involved the marriage of film, computers and music in collaboration
with such luminaries as computer programmer Kenneth Knowlton and
computer musicians Jean-Claude Risset, Max Mathews and Richard
Moore.
This screening forms part of PureScreen, Castlefield Gallery's regular
screening event for artists film and video. For further details
