In October 1888 the French born inventor Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince recorded what is probably the first film in the history of cinema. His subject was Leeds Bridge – the ebb and flow of humanity – people going about their daily business unaware that their motions were being inscribed into history. Only nineteen frames of his colossal efforts exist today. In this new video work, New York artist Ken Jacobs probes the magnitude and infinity of the existing frames, using a unique 3d projection system (with 3d glasses) to reveal hidden beauty and unlock great waves of motion.

Nineteen (Obscure) Frames That Changed the World will tour to four venues across the UK over the next 18 months. The project has been made possible through the generous support of the National Media Museum and funding from Arts Council England and The Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society.

A unique opportunity for artists and filmmakers to learn about the use of film projection as a creative medium. Beginning with an introduction to the multitude of different ways that artists have investigated the creative possibilities of projection, Evolution guest Bruce McClure will demonstrate how he creates expansive and hypnotic performances with modified 16mm projectors. Participants will then have the chance to get their hands on a 16mm projector, learn how it works and experiment with some ideas. A great opportunity for artists with little knowledge of the history of artist’s film and video and for those who’d like to learn more about the technical and conceptual possibilities of film.

Cucinema is an Italian collective of cinematographic cooks, who bring the raw ingredients for participants to transform and prepare into a shared feast for the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. A cross between a laboratory, an installation and a happening, Cucinema is open to anyone who wishes to take part. Participants will have the opportunity to be involved in three labs – film, sound and cooking – featuring scratching and painting on film, sound making and the preparation of traditional Roman cuisine. The event will culminate in a shared meal and a screening of the resulting film. All are welcome to this free afternoon of collective creativity, including children accompanied by an adult. Feel free to drop in for an hour, or to stay for the whole event.

All food will be vegetarian.
