A new single screen video installation by Michael Snow. The thin curtain in Snow’s rural retreat in Newfoundland billows in the wind, creating unpredictable compositions of folds, revealing and concealing a window to the idyllic surrounding landscape and the small solar panel being used to power the camera equipment. “While on one level, Solar Breath is merely a fixed-camera documentary recording, it is also the result of years of attention.” (Snow)

Installation: 2002, single screen video installation with sound

The Glass Stare, Karen Mirza & Brad Butler, film still
Karen Mirza & Brad Butler: The Glass Stare
Leeds City Art Gallery (The Yorkshire Bank Gallery) | 3 - 9 April | Mon - Sat: 10am - 5pm; Wed 10am - 8pm; Sun: 1 - 5pm | Free

“Before the camera obscura was invented many painters (including Vermeer and Caravaggio) discovered that mirrors could be used to reflect an image onto a canvas that they could then trace and paint. In many of these paintings, one can study the effects of the dramatic lighting (the cinematic effect) that was needed in order to cast an upside down reflected image of the person sitting for their portrait. For the ‘Glass stare’ we have replaced the person sitting for two film loops, which are projected onto 2 different screens. Using two mirrors we then catch the reflection of these screens and project them both onto a small canvas in the middle of the space.” (Mirza, Butler)

Installation: 2005, 3 screen 16mm film installation
