BAFTA North
The British Academy of Film and Television North (BAFTA North) in
association with BT is delighted to support this year's 3rd Evolution
strand of the Leeds International Film Festival, the first strand
of a film festival to recognise and promote the new digital revolution.
BAFTA North is the first regional branch of The British Academy of
Film and Television Arts which has branches in Scotland, Wales, New
York and LA. BAFTA North plays a key role in promoting the industry
of moving image outside London and has offices in both Manchester
and Liverpool. BAFTA North is supported by Granada TV and Yorkshire
Tyne Tees TV and works closely with film distributors, television
companies, media organisations, regional arts boards and education
institutions across the regions often acting as a consultant, lending
advice and providing an invaluable source of expertise.
BAFTA North offers a diverse programme of events for its membership
as well as promoting the pool of creative talent that exists in the
North on a national and international level. Most recent charitable
film premieres include Liam, written by Jimmy McGovern directed by
Stephen Frears and A Hard Day's Night both attracting over 2,500 attendees
including prominent industry figures and celebrities.
This year BAFTA North is collaborating with BT and BAFTA Piccadilly
Interactive Council on a series of interactive digital media events,
the first being an exciting new initiative with Evolution.
Evolution's innovative programme broadens the remit of the festival
to attract new audiences, increase access by finding new ways of presenting
the moving image using new digital technology. BAFTA North and Evolution
recognises the cultural importance of new unexplored venues for filmmakers
and artists. This year's festival will explore the use of alternative
venues by using a department store and two outdoor spaces to exhibit
film for the 'event' experience of going to the cinema or the 'communal'
feeling of sitting down with friends or family, a personal experience
that cannot be digitally enhanced! Therefore recognising that the
digital revolution crosses into other disciplines, altering the way
people are entertained, how and what entertainment is produced for
them to consume. For example, by 2003 high quality short films such
as the BAFTA nominated Periwig Maker will be the premium, perfectly
formatted content for consumption anytime, everywhere.
The vastness of this new digital revolution has an impact on everyone
from filmmakers, distributors and consumers who have to adjust to
the infinite possibilities that new technologies offer the world of
entertainment industries. This conference underlines the conviction
of BAFTA North, BT and Evolution's aim to promote and integrate Yorkshire
with global digital pioneers.
