Artists using digital presentation and playback technologies such
as LCD/CRT video projection, video-wall and DVD are traditionally
led by the commercial developments that bring about the technology's
availability. A very good example can be found with the digital video
projector which has been primarily developed to enable business-to-business
presentations but which has simultaneously brought video projection
and digital film presentation within the reach of many artists and
galleries. An easy parallel in history can be found with the famous
Cinepak camera produced by Sony in the 70's for TV newsgathering which
similarly brought portable video recording (as opposed to film) within
the reach of artists and film-makers. New Screens is a residency based
commission which acknowledges these precedents, influences and exchanges
and recognises the huge opportunities offered to an artist sited at
the source of these evolving technologies. New Screens is an industry
partnered commission-in-development that aims to encourage intellectual
exchanges at an artistic, conceptual and scientific level and explore
the fertile ground between artists, scientists and manufacturers.
Many early, pioneering and experimental film-makers sought to expose
the nature of their new medium and new imaging technologies offer
the same, fresh opportunities but in a multiplicity of new digital
materials and media developed to meet the needs of expanding commercial
and consumer markets. The floor to ceiling gallery experience of video
has now become commonplace and as the distinction between artists
and film-makers becomes blurred the technologies prompting these changes
remain overlooked. Whether an electronic image is viewed in a cinema,
gallery, public space or mobile phone the intrinsic nature of venues,
screens and audiences is firmly anchored in a reliance upon screen
technology and the human role within their functions.
For the New screens residency opportunity Lumen is inviting applications
of interest from artists interested in developing a UK/European residency
placement with a manufacturer or University research department. Several
manufacturers and research agencies have been identified and approached
as possible 'hosts' with a view to placement in the Spring/Summer
of 2002.
