The Evolution 2001 festival [27th Sept - 12th October] was a huge
success drawing diverse audiences of over 15 000 to its exhibitions,
events, seminars and public projections. Some images from the programme
can be found below.

Millennium Square Outdoor video projection
3 programmes of short films played from sunset to sunrise on a large
outdoor screen in Millennium Square. The programme included
work by video artist Mark Dean, a series of 1 minute shorts co-commissioned
by Film Four and Dazed Film and TV and films selected by Lumen from
an International call for entries. A public audience in excess of
10 000 is expected to have watched the programme over the 2 weeks
period.

Evolution International Conference
An audience of 750 creative professionals, filmmakers, students,
artists and academics attended this years Evolution International
Conference at the Leeds Odeon Cinema which has since closed. Malcolm
Le Grice (Central St Martins College), Carol Stakenas (Creative
Time), Lucy Kimbell (artist), François Penz (Cambridge University
Moving Image Studio) and Tom Loosemoore (BBC Online) delivered critical
speeches around the theme of SCALE - screens, audiences and spaces.

Parallax
Views - Harvey Nichols
A unique programme of ultra-short films employing micro-narratives,
flash animation and digital video played for the duration of
Evolution on the 20 second escalator journey to the fourth floor
of harvey Nichols. |
Intermix
A 1960's cinema, unused and semi-derelict
since 1980 provided a unique venue for a fascinating look at digital
film courtesy of Glitch and Onedotzero with ambient electronica
from Vector DJ's and Hutah VJ's.

Produced by Lumen in partnership with the Leeds International
Film Festival. Evolution forms part of the West Yorkshire
Digital Media Initiative and is part funded by the European
Regional Development Fund.
