Soundartist/composer Iris Garrelfs works primarily with field recordings and vocal responses to environments, producing outstanding, ephemeral compositions and improvised performances. In recent years, her practice has become increasingly cross-media, with a focus on site-specific works.
Swannsong is a sound-based installation, developed for the Borough Courtroom in Leeds Town Hall. Commissioned by Lumen for Evolution 2008, the project takes its inspiration from the case of Emily Swann (who in 1903 was controversially sentenced to death in the Town Hall for the murder of her husband), with the piece exploring the concept of a time-based judicial system.
Iris Garrelfs has worked with the likes of Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot), Kaffe Matthews, and Scanner, and is co-founder of London's influential sonic test-bed Sprawl.
